Some iPhone Duo Owners Report Cracked Inner Screens Days After Launch

A small number of early iPhone Duo owners say their inner screens cracked along the hinge within hours or days. How widespread it is remains unclear, and Apple hasn't commented.

Apple’s first foldable, the iPhone Duo, went on sale on Friday, October 23 (here’s our launch rundown). Two days later, the hot topic isn’t the $1,999 price tag. It’s photos of cracked screens.

What’s being reported

Since launch day, some owners have posted photos on Reddit and the MacRumors forums of inner screens cracked right along the hinge, usually with a bright white line of pixels across one side of the display. MacRumors, The Verge, 9to5Mac and Tom’s Guide have all written it up, and the reports come from the U.S., Australia and China.

The most-quoted case is an owner in Australia who says the phone had been opened fewer than 20 times in about six hours. In their words, they “heard an audible crack, and the screen broke right along the hinge,” with no marks on the screen or hinge beforehand. A couple of people told 9to5Mac theirs cracked during initial setup.

How big is this, really?

Honestly? Nobody knows yet, and it’s worth keeping that in perspective:

  • 9to5Mac counted about ten unique cases as of Sunday morning.
  • AppleInsider checked with Genius Bar sources at seven Apple Stores, including four flagships, on Saturday. None had seen a Duo come in with a broken screen.
  • MacRumors notes that some of the photos from China appear to be store demo units, and user damage can’t be ruled out in every case.
  • Apple has likely shipped a lot of these phones, so a handful of early failures doesn’t by itself mean a widespread defect.

There’s an unconfirmed theory on social media that a batch of hinges has a misaligned part pressing up on the screen. That’s a theory, not a finding.

What about durability tests?

JerryRigEverything put the Duo through his usual torture test. The inner screen scratched at Mohs level 2 (normal for foldables), sand got into the hinge, and a bend test left a permanent green line before the inner display stopped responding. That’s deliberate abuse, not normal use, but it confirms the fold is the weak spot. On the other hand, a separate 10,000-fold machine test found the crease deepens over time while the hinge kept working smoothly.

What Apple is saying (so far)

Nothing publicly. The Verge and 9to5Mac both asked Apple for comment and hadn’t heard back. Owners say Apple Stores have been swapping affected phones on the spot, though one carrier customer told 9to5Mac they were told it was drop damage. MacRumors says normal-use hinge failures should be covered by the one-year warranty, and there’s a 14-day return window.

Why it matters

First-generation foldables almost always have teething problems. Samsung’s original Galaxy Fold famously got delayed over screen failures. Whether this turns into a real “Crackgate” or fades as a few early-batch duds depends on whether the reports keep piling up over the next couple of weeks.

So, would you buy a first-gen iPhone Duo right now, or wait for version two?
